This guide walks you through connecting your Google Nest thermostats to Seam. Your thermostats must already be set up and working in the Google Home app before proceeding.

1. Set up Google Device Access

Before connecting Nest devices to Seam, you must create a Google Device Access project — including an associated OAuth client — and provide information about this project to Seam through the Seam Console. We recommend that you apply for Google Commercial Development for your Nest devices. For detailed instructions, see Obtain Google Nest Device Access and Commercial Development.
Note the restrictive rate limits in the Google Device Access Sandbox environment while testing the integration with customers.
The period of time that Google takes to approve Commercial Development may range from a week to more than a month. For more information, see Apply for Commercial Development on the Google Device Access site. Once Google approves your Commercial Development application, you can gradually scale the number of managed devices as you proceed through the Google stages to reach Google certification for Commercial Production.

2. Create a Google Home account

If you don’t already have one, download the Google Home app and create an account. Add your Nest thermostats in the app and confirm they are online.

3. Connect Google Nest to Seam

Use the login credentials for your Google Home account to log in through the Seam Connect Webview and authorize Seam to access your devices.

4. Verify the connection

After completing the Connect Webview, confirm that your Nest thermostats appear in your Seam workspace and show an online status.

Troubleshooting

If you see a “No access to partner” error in the Connect Webview:
  • Verify that you have obtained Google Commercial Development. Until you obtain Commercial Development, you can only connect devices associated directly with your own Google test users’ accounts.
  • Confirm that you added the developer email address as a home member in the Google Home app settings.
If your devices don’t appear after connecting:
  • Confirm that your Nest thermostats are online in the Google Home app.
  • Verify that you logged in with the same Google account that owns the thermostats.
  • Wait a few minutes for the initial sync to complete, then refresh your device list.
